The way the body’s respiratory system responds to inhaled particles depends very much on where the particles settle. An inflammation of the mucous membranes can occur if any irritant dust settles in the nose, leading to rhinitis. However, if the particles attack the larger air passages, they can cause inflammation of the trachea (tracheitis) or the bronchi (bronchitis). The most significant reactions occur in the deepest parts of the lungs.
Particles that don’t settle in the nose or throat tend to sit in the small sacs or close to the end of the airways, but if there is a large amount of dust, it can cause the macrophage system to fail. Dust particles and dust-containing macrophages collect in the lung tissue, causing serious injury to the lungs. An efficient method of preventing inhalation is by installing a proper dust extraction system, such as the BOFA DP400.
The BOFA DustPRO range of extraction units has been developed for the safe and effective removal of dust, swarf and smaller particulates during processes such as routing, engraving, grinding and podiatry treatments. The DP400 produces 400 m3/hr of airflow at a pressure of 96 mbar in a compact unit – allowing it to capture dust very effectively. One of the main problems with other router extraction units relates to the type of pump used. Most have brushed motors, which are noisy and frequently burn out – the average life of brushes is around 800 hours. The pumps used in the DustPRO range are brushless and are designed for continuous use with a minimum 30,000 hours of use before servicing. They generate high vacuums and are quiet in operation. The large capacity F8 bag filter has a very high capacity for fine dust and can easily be emptied and re-used. Plus, the HEPA filter has a 99.997% efficiency down to 0.3 microns.
