CLEAPSS (Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have joined forces to publish guidance for Local Authorities and Educational Institutes for use of 3D printers.

This guidance includes the risk posed to the teachers and pupils alike that can arise from 3D printing and offer advice on the legal minimum controls for these risks and the best way to go about implementing them.

But who are CLEAPSS and why does what they say matter?

CLEAPSS was founded in 1965 by the then, Greater London Council to promote high quality and effective practical work in Science.

CLEAPSS has since expanded to included ALL bar two of the Local Authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland amoung its members and work closely with the Health and Safety Executive, are a major training provider, advising Awarding Bodies on practical examination questions and more.

The guidance covers the different aspects of 3D printing and the potentially harmful risks they pose, from lifting the equipment to using Local Exhaust Ventilation.
