  • Polishing and Buffing Fume and Dust Extraction

Polishing and buffing are integral to the finishing of a lot of products in a variety of industries, especially metalworking. Both of these are surface finishing processes, but give a slightly different result. However, both processes require a fume and dust extraction solution.

Polishing refers to the process of removing surface imperfections using a fixed abrasive on a work wheel. This process smoothens out any tool marks left on the surface of the product, including scratches, pits, and other such marks. It is also used to remove rust or tarnish.

Buffing also uses a fabric wheel as abrasive, but unlike polishing, it also uses a compound like wax or grease for a finer finish. It is used for creating a brighter, lustrous surface appearance as it wears down any fine lines.

Polishing scrapes the surface to produce fine dust. This dust can remain airborne or settle down, only to become airborne when disturbed. With buffing, there is the additional danger of the compound fumes and fabric dust. The fabric dust is harmful if inhaled, but is also a fire and explosion hazard as it is combustible. This is why you need proper fume and dust extraction systems when polishing or buffing.

We offer a complete range of polishing and buffing fume and dust extraction systems. You can also contact us to talk about your application and how our dust extraction products, including downdraft benches, dust extractors with arms and large capacity dust extractors, can help protect you.
