The VX1001 in jewellery manufacturing.
In this product focus, instead of simply telling you about one of our products, we are going to tell you how the unit works in an application.
The VX1001 Fume Extractor
The Vodex VX1001 is designed for one-person jobs that produce low volume (small amounts at a time) of fume and or dust. Let’s take an example of this – such as artisan jewellery making – and see how the VX1001 would fit into the application.
Jewellery making often involves a wide range of different processes that can all produce different types of airborne contaminates – fumes, dust and vapours in small amounts but frequently – low volume.
Soldering in jewellery is often done with either a soldering iron (think the architype soldering iron you probably used in school) or with a small gas torch. Hot soldering like this (regardless if its is done with an iron or torch) produces a fume. Fume is a combination of vaporized solid particulates (tiny, super-heated dust from the items you are soldering) and gases – from the blow torch gases and the air reacting with the torch flame.
The VX1001 comes, as standard with a heat resistant extraction nozzle for soldering with an Iron for soldering with a gas torch (which will melt the silicon heat resistant arm and nozzle) the VX1001 can be upgraded to a bench mounted stainless steel arm.
The filters in the VX1001 include a HEPA filter which is highly effective at filtering of dusts (including vaporised particulates) down to 0.3microns, which takes care of the particulate part of the fume. The VX1001 also includes Activated Carbon Filters (also called Gas filters) which are very effective at removing the gases from the soldering process.
So – the dangers from breathing in soldering fume are handled by the VX1001.
Working the metal, such as grinding and sanding jewellery produces dust. If you use a tool like a Dremel style tool, the fast-rotating tool head will fling the dust out and into the air. If you use non-powered hand tools – files, rubbing papers etc, then the dust can be more contained but slightly larger in particulate weight.
In order to properly capture and contain the dust from these processes you need a good amount of air flow. The VX1001 pulls 300 cubic meters per hour of air – more than enough to drag all the airborne dust from your hand working.
This is also true for Enamelling powder.
Enamel powder can be very light and is easily billowed up into the air. This means it can easily drift on airflows so we have to make sure it is captured quickly before it “escapes”.
As well as the performance needed to properly capture these dusts, the VX1001 also has a Pre-filter and a HEPA filter. The Pre-filter will protect the HEPA filter from large particles and the HEPA filter itself – as above – is excellent at filtering out very small dry dusts from the air.
Soldering and working of the metals are the biggest creators of harmful airborne fumes and dusts that can cause damage to your respiratory system.
Pickling
If you are using a safe pickling solution like PickClean citric pickling solution then the VX’s carbon filters will remove and filter the vapours from this solution.
The VX handles the fume and dust, so do many other extraction units, so what else is good about it?
I am glad you asked…
The VX1001, unlike many extraction systems in its price range, has a digital display screen and speed control with a lock out feature (so the settings cant be tampered with) and a digital remote control – so you don’t need to keep being down to turn it on or off.
The VX1001 also has 4 sturdy, lockable castors – so you can wheel it around the workshop as you need to.
Finally (well done for reading this far) the VX1001 is one of the most cost-effective units available with these features.
So to sum up (nearly done)…
The VX1001 is mobile, efficient, powerful, will handle all of the main contaminates produced when making jewellery, has a remote control (always a plus) and wont break your bank account.
