The dangers of dust
Dusts can be one of the most dangerous by-products of manufacturing processes. Companies that use processes which cause large amounts of dusts to be released into the air need to be mindful of COSHH regulations, and should seek to protect their people with suitable extraction solutions.
As explained in detail on our dust extraction page, there are two types of dusts to be mindful of, inhalable and respirable.
- Inhalable dusts are larger, often being between the same size or up to ten times smaller than a human hair. They can easily be breathed in and lodge themselves into the soft tissue in the mouth, nose and throat, causing irritation or even severe lasting damage
- Respirable dusts are typically invisible to the human eye and can be breathed all the way into the lungs, meaning they can cause serious lung illnesses like COPD and lung cancer.
Because each type of dust is different and each workplace poses unique challenges, at VODEX we recommend solutions suited to specific challenges and industries.
In the case of larger, heavier dusts such as metal dusts, high energy and high velocity airflows are required to remove them from the work area, much like a high-suction industrial vacuum.
