Antistatic bench and floor matting is an essential part of an EPA – Electro Static Protected Area. It prevents the build up of static charges that would normally be present on an insulated bench – such as a plastic laminate. Any electostatic charges are dissipated through the mat to an earth grounding point and can be made of a dissipative vinyl or more often double layer rubber matting – dissipative on side and conductive on the back. The charges pass through the thin top layer – available in a range of colours but typically blue or grey, into the conductive layer straight to earth constantly, therefore no static is allowed to build up. The operator is also connected to the mat usually via a 10mm earth stud or 4mm crocodile plug, and this prevents any static charges from the operator damaging sensitive electroic components. Floor matting can also be a great addition to the EPA, along with ESD chairs and Anti Static overalls, workwear and even shoes or heel grounders.
